Before ordering

This is an area estimate. Carpet roll width, seams, pattern matching and room shape can change the amount needed, so confirm the final quantity with your fitter or supplier.

Measure simple and awkward rooms

For a rectangular room, enter its length and width. For an L-shaped room, alcove or connected space, divide the floor plan into separate rectangles and add each one as a room section. Give the sections useful names so the copied summary is easy to check later.

Choose metres or feet before entering measurements. Switching units converts the dimensions already entered and displays the final requirement in both square metres and square feet.

How the carpet area is worked out

Each rectangular section uses length × width. The measured areas are added together, then the selected waste percentage is applied to the combined total. Waste allows for cuts, joins, pattern matching and fitting errors; the appropriate amount depends on the room and the carpet.

Two-section example

Main section: 4 m × 3 m = 12 m².

Alcove: 2 m × 1.5 m = 3 m².

Measured total: 15 m². With 10% waste: 16.5 m² required.

Before ordering carpet

This result estimates floor area, not the exact roll width, seam layout or direction needed for installation. Carpet is commonly supplied in fixed widths, so a fitter may need more material than the area alone suggests. Measure at the widest points, include door recesses where appropriate and confirm the final cutting plan with your supplier or installer.

  • Use consistent units for every section.
  • Do not subtract permanent fixtures unless they genuinely do not need carpet around them.
  • Increase the allowance for complex layouts or patterned carpet when advised by the fitter.

FAQs

Questions about the carpet area calculator

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Split it into two non-overlapping rectangles, enter the length and width of each, and let the calculator combine their areas.

How much carpet waste should I add?

The tool offers 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% presets plus a custom value. The right allowance depends on cuts, roll width, pattern and fitting plan.

Does the result account for carpet roll width?

No. It calculates total area. Fixed roll widths and seam placement can change the quantity that must be purchased.

Can I measure in feet?

Yes. Select feet to enter dimensions in feet and receive square-foot results, with the converted square-metre total also shown.
