This uses the appliance's full rated power and excludes standing charges. Thermostats, standby modes and automatic cycling can make actual consumption lower or higher.
Enter the appliance power rating in watts or kilowatts, how long it runs on each use-day, the number of use-days per week and your electricity unit price. The result shows energy consumption and cost per use-day, week, month and year.
Use the rating plate, manual or manufacturer specification for wattage. For appliances that cycle on and off, such as thermostatically controlled heaters or fridges, the rated maximum may overstate typical consumption.
Electricity is billed in kilowatt hours. Divide watts by 1,000 to get kilowatts, then multiply by hours used. Multiply the resulting kWh by your unit price in pounds, dollars or euros.
2,000 W = 2 kW. Used for 2 hours: 2 × 2 = 4 kWh.
At 25 pence per kWh, one use-day costs 4 × £0.25 = £1.00.
The calculator uses the unit rate you enter. It does not add a daily standing charge because that charge is generally paid regardless of whether this particular appliance is used. Your tariff, VAT treatment and peak/off-peak prices may differ, so take the unit rate from your own bill for the most relevant estimate.
