Plan the fuel cost of a journey

Enter the one-way distance, choose miles or kilometres, add your vehicle efficiency and enter the pump price. The calculator supports UK MPG, US MPG, litres per 100 km and kilometres per litre, and can convert prices quoted per litre, UK gallon or US gallon.

Turn on return journey to double the travel distance. Add the number of passengers to see an equal fuel-cost share per person alongside total fuel, total cost and cost per distance unit.

How fuel use is estimated

The selected efficiency is converted internally to litres per 100 km. Total litres equal distance in kilometres multiplied by litres per 100 km, divided by 100. The fuel cost then uses the entered price after converting it to a per-litre amount.

UK MPG example

A 100-mile trip at 50 MPG (UK) uses about 2 UK gallons, or 9.09 litres.

At £1.45 per litre, the estimated fuel cost is about £13.18.

Why real fuel use varies

Traffic, speed, weather, terrain, tyre pressure, vehicle load and driving style all affect economy. Dashboard estimates can also differ from measured fuel use. Treat the result as a planning estimate and leave a margin for detours or changing conditions.

  • UK and US gallons are different sizes, so choose the correct MPG convention.
  • Passenger splitting covers fuel only, not parking, tolls, wear or other travel costs.
  • Use a recent real-world efficiency figure when available.

FAQs

Questions about the fuel cost & trip calculator

What is the difference between UK and US MPG?

A UK imperial gallon is larger than a US gallon, so the same vehicle and journey produce different MPG numbers under each convention.

Can I include the return journey?

Yes. Enable return journey and the calculator doubles the entered one-way distance before estimating fuel and cost.

Does cost per passenger include other expenses?

No. It divides estimated fuel cost equally and does not include tolls, parking, vehicle wear or driver time.

Should I use official or real-world MPG?

A recent real-world figure from your own driving usually gives a more practical journey estimate than a laboratory rating.
