Calculate elapsed time between two clock times

Enter a start and end time to see the elapsed duration as hours and minutes and as one total number of minutes. This is useful for work shifts, journeys, appointments, events, equipment use and any situation where two clock times need to be compared.

When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as the following day. Matching start and end times mean zero by default; enable the next-day option when they represent a full 24-hour period.

Overnight periods and break deductions

Crossing midnight requires adding the time remaining before midnight to the time after midnight. The calculator handles this automatically and labels the result as overnight. Enable the optional break field to subtract unpaid lunch, rest or interruption time from the total elapsed period.

Worked time examples

09:15 to 17:45 is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 510 minutes.

22:30 to 06:15 is an overnight duration of 7 hours 45 minutes.

08:30 to 17:00 is 8 hours 30 minutes elapsed; subtracting 30 minutes leaves 8 hours.

Time duration is not always paid time

The result performs clock arithmetic only. It does not decide whether a break is paid, apply overtime rules, round timesheets or interpret an employment contract. For payroll, travel claims or legal records, use the exact rounding and break rules required by the relevant organisation.

FAQs

Questions about the time duration calculator

Can the calculator cross midnight?

Yes. An end time earlier than the start time is automatically treated as occurring on the following day.

How do I subtract a lunch break?

Enable “Subtract a break” and enter the break length in minutes. It is removed from the elapsed duration.

What do identical start and end times mean?

They mean zero elapsed time unless you enable the next-day option, which treats them as 24 hours apart.

Does this calculate wages or overtime?

No. It calculates elapsed time only and does not apply pay rates, overtime or employment rules.
