Count working days for the right UK nation

Choose a start date, end date and UK nation. The calculator counts Monday to Friday and can remove the bank holidays that apply in England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. The result also separates weekend days and excluded bank holidays so the total is easy to check.

Use the start-date and end-date options to match your deadline, leave or project convention. Dates can be entered in either order, and the calculation runs privately in your browser.

Why the UK nation matters

The bank-holiday calendar is not identical across the UK. Scotland includes 2 January and St Andrew’s Day and uses an earlier summer bank holiday. Northern Ireland includes St Patrick’s Day and the Battle of the Boyne. Selecting the correct nation prevents those differences from being overlooked.

Simple example

A Monday-to-Friday period normally contains five working days.

If one of those weekdays is an applicable bank holiday, the result becomes four when bank-holiday exclusion is enabled.

Check formal deadlines and local holidays

The calculator’s recurring-date rules, substitute days and exceptional dates were checked against the GOV.UK bank-holiday calendar on 15 August 2026. Verified coverage is 2019 to 2028 for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Dates outside that range show a warning and do not exclude unverified bank holidays.

Future governments can announce additional dates, while local authorities, schools and employers may observe other holidays. Confirm critical legal, payroll or delivery deadlines against the latest official calendar and the rules of the organisation involved.

For the latest published dates, check the official UK bank holidays list.
