How VAT is calculated

To add VAT, multiply the net price by the VAT rate, then add that VAT amount to the original price. For a £100 price excluding VAT at the standard 20% rate:

£100 excluding VAT at 20%

VAT = £100 × 20% = £20

Total including VAT = £120

How to remove VAT from a price

Removing 20% VAT is not the same as subtracting 20% from the VAT-inclusive total. The VAT was calculated from the smaller net price. To reverse it, divide the gross amount by 1.20. For £120 including 20% VAT, £120 ÷ 1.20 gives a £100 net price. The VAT element is the £20 difference between the gross and net amounts. At the standard 20% rate, that £20 is one-sixth of the £120 VAT-inclusive total because 20 ÷ 120 = 1 ÷ 6. This one-sixth shortcut applies only when extracting 20% VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount.

UK VAT rates

The standard UK VAT rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% and a zero rate of 0% also apply in qualifying circumstances. The correct treatment depends on the goods or services and the circumstances of the transaction, so this calculator should be used as a convenient calculation aid rather than professional tax advice.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How do I add 20% VAT?

Multiply the net price by 0.20 to find the VAT, then add it to the net price. For example, 20% of £50 is £10, giving a VAT-inclusive total of £60.

How do I remove 20% VAT from a total?

Divide the VAT-inclusive total by 1.20. Subtracting 20% gives the wrong net amount because the VAT is 20% of the net price, not 20% of the gross total.

Is VAT always 20% in the UK?

No. The standard rate is 20%, but reduced and zero rates also exist. The VAT treatment depends on the goods or services and the circumstances.

Can I use a different VAT rate?

Yes. Select Custom in the VAT rate controls and enter any non-negative rate. The net, VAT and gross figures update instantly.
